Description

Maxwell "Max" Von Hauer (born Maxwell Eichmann Von Schumacher; October 11, 1881 - November 5, 1979) was a German film director. A noted fan of horror stories and greatly influenced by the likes of Mary Shelly, Bram Stoker, and Edgar Alan Poe, he was best known for his 1926 film As Sunlight Dies. Unfortunately, the film was incomplete and never had an official release date. In one of the last scenes of the film where Claudette Irving's character was strangulated and shot multiple times by disgruntled cast members and stage crew, Hauer continued to roll camera until he was out of film, never working on an ending... During World War I, he served as a field medic for the German air force. To distract himself from stress brought on by the war, Hauer became engrossed in his favorite horror novels and wrote many short stories to purge himself of the atrocities he was subjected to not only on the battle field, but from many a fallen and injured soldier.

He was also known for his own short film interpretation of Danse Macabre in 1922, based on the tone poem written by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. Hauer later emigrated to Hollywood in 1916, where he joined Paramount Pictures and made five more films, including "War Ghoul" (1917), "Heart of Darkness" (1918), "The Tall Man of Dresden" (1919), "Where Are You Now?" (1920), and "Dirty Black Summer" (1921). Through out his career, Hauer has made a total of 68 films. In 1925, a year before the release of As Sunlight Dies, he was a creative consultant and assistant director of Lon Chaney, Sr., to whom he had befriended. Hauer had influenced many a director and film maker, those included were: Francis Ford Coppola, Jerry Bruckheimer, Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, Ingmar Bergman, Eli Roth, Martin Scorcsese, Oliver Stone, Dario Argento, and Lucio Fulci. On November 5th, 1979, Hauer died peacefully in his Hollywood penthouse of natural causes with his family at his side at the age of 98. His penthouse has been converted into a museum showcasing his career.
